The Museum opened its 300-square-foot gallery with a dozen hands-on activities illustrating the area’s rich maritime history. Frina Design guided the planning and design process while the museum volunteers and staff built the ship! Interactive elements were designed for kids of all ages. Using archival photographs, a looping video of Amelia Harbor’s waterfront scenes scrolling backwards animates the boat experience. Costumes and masks allow kids to play “Captain” while the interactive ship’s wheel is geared to slightly older kids. A magnetic interactive allows kids to toy around with the earth’s natural compass. And not to forget the sense of smell – the exhibit had barrels with gunpowder, tobacco and oranges – just some of the common goods you can find on a “ship” like this.
